Aerobic exercise is generally good for you. Walking, running, biking, swimming – they’re all things that can help you to maintain a healthy weight and make you feel like a million bucks. But there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. It’s important to find a balance of exercise and rest that benefits your body. The issue most people run into is how to know where to draw the line. Here are a few things that may help you to find the right balance for your health.
The Benefits of Cardiovascular Exercise
Cardio is a great way to strengthen your heart and lungs. Some people think that the more of this type of exercise you do, the healthier you’ll be. That’s not necessarily true, though. But what counts as too much exercise can differ from person to person. Many factors must be taken into account in order to determine if the level of exercise is healthy or not, including:
- Fitness level
- Intensity of exercise
- Health status
- How much you eat
- How much you sleep
- Fitness goals
Those are just a few of the things that should be taken into consideration when it comes to determining what a healthy amount of exercise should be.
Stress on the Body
Even though exercise is healthy for you, it’s also perceived as a stressor by your body. That’s why too much can have an impact on your health, both mental and physical. The thing everyone must do is listen to their body to determine what is a healthy amount of exercise and what might not be because whether you recognize it or not, your body is giving you signs.
Signs of Too Much Cardio

- Do you feel tired all day?
- Do you have trouble sleeping?
- Do you feel unrested even after a full night’s sleep?
- Has your speed, strength or endurance gotten worse over time?
- Do you get sick a lot?
- Do you have trouble with your recovery between workouts?
- Have you suffered an overuse injury?
Many people who exercise consistently don’t fall into the category of too much exercise, but it’s always good to know what signs you should be on the lookout for.
