Why You Should Quit Smoking Today

By Sara Butler

Smoking is terrible for your health. In fact, it’s one of the worst things you can do to yourself. Yet, in spite of all the warnings, millions of people still smoke. If you’re looking for a few more compelling reasons to quit, then look no further. Here are a few reasons why you should quit smoking today.

It Increases the Risk of Diabetes

There’s some data that suggests that the toxins in cigarettes interfere with the way the body converts sugar into energy. This disruption can put you at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Plus, the substances in cigarette smoke don’t allow your body to use insulin well, leading to increased glucose in your blood, which then creates high blood sugar.

It Increases Risk of Infection

People who smoke have a higher incidence of infections of all different kinds. You may think that the lungs are most susceptible, and while there is some truth to that since the lungs are weakened, the reason they’re at risk for infections of all kinds is due to the weakening of the immune system.

Smoking also breaks down the mucous membranes, your body’s first defense against infection. That means it’s easier for bacteria and viruses to invade your body and cause illness. This is true for people exposed to second-hand smoke, too.

It Ages You

The impact of smoking can be seen right on your skin. Premature wrinkles and other signs of aging show up in smokers. That’s because smoking interferes with the ability of your cells to heal, making it more difficult to keep your skin moisturized.

The skin isn’t the only part of the body that shows signs of premature aging. The internal organs, if they could be seen, do too.

It’s Bad for Your Teeth

The stuff in cigarette smoke breaks down the protective enamel on your teeth, leading to dental issues and disease. Smoking can cause:

  • Cavities
  • Yellowing of the teeth
  • Weakened tooth enamel
  • Inflamed gums
  • Bad breath

Do you need more reasons to quit smoking? You probably get this lecture a lot, but if you can overcome cigarettes today, it’s not too late for your body to begin to heal itself. Work with your chiropractor to help you get away from cigarettes and start to lead a healthier life!
