Holiday Headaches: How to Prevent Them

By Virginia Laird

With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it is no wonder that many feel as though catching their breath can be nearly impossible. For thousands across the nation, the fast-paced lifestyle can lead to headaches, which can be brutal. Although you may think there is little you can do to completely avoid these occurrences, health and wellness experts suggest there are a few things you can try to help prevent holiday headaches from ruining your holiday season. These tips include:

  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Choose a healthy diet
  • Make hydration a priority

Get Plenty of Sleep

Experts admit that sleep is necessary, and making sure to get plenty of it even more so. Not only can sleep keep you healthy, it can help prevent headaches. Health and wellness experts suggest that the average adult should get at least six hours of sleep each night. This can be a struggle during the holiday months. For those who find getting enough sleep each night to be impossible, experts suggest finding a little time for a light nap can be beneficial in preventing holiday headaches.

Choose a Healthy Diet

Research suggests that where there is a lack of healthy eating, there can be a host of health issues. This can include headaches. Health and wellness experts advise that healthy eating should include a host of fruits and veggies as well as lean proteins. Following a healthy diet does not indicate there is no wiggle room for a few holiday treats. However, these should not be consumed daily.

Make Hydration a Priority

Health and wellness experts admit that a lack of proper hydration can lead to headaches anytime of the year. However, the fast-paced lifestyle the holiday season invites tends to have more people suffering with headaches related to hydration. It is suggested that you should drink at least half of your body weight in ounces each day. If you are one who prefers soda and juice to water, it may be wise to give flavored water a try. Making sure to consume enough water can help you keep headaches at bay.

Now you have the knowledge necessary to make a step in the right direction of giving your holiday headaches the boot. Happy holidays!
