Finding Success With Online School

By Donna Stark

If your children are still navigating math lessons and listening to science lectures from the comfort of their bedroom, you already know how challenging online school can continue to be. But despite the difficulties, the importance of education and socialization to your children's health and development has not changed, so you need to make sure your children can find success. Here are some easy tips to follow that can make their experience a little bit better.

Keep Communication Lines Open

Communicating with your children and their teachers should be a priority, so keep the communication lines open. This may mean you need to check in every week to talk to teachers about assignments, grades, and any other concerns you might have, and you may need to check in every night with your children to stay on top of their work.

Create a Healthy Environment

Is your older child trying to get work done in the same room as your toddler? The toddler who is throwing toys, throwing tantrums, and throwing food in the air? Or are your children trying to balance their laptops and books on their knees as they lounge in bed? Creating a healthy learning environment is vital for their success. Try to choose a specific area in the home that is quiet, ergonomically designed, and free of distractions.

Establish a Schedule

Just as if they were in school, your children should have a set schedule to follow at home. This allows them a chance to manage their time better, focus on the task at hand, and reduce a lot of stress and anxiety from their lives. A calendar and day planner are really good tools to use for this.

Give Plenty of Breaks

If your children are young, they are used to gym class and recess, and if they are older, they are used to the 10-minute breaks between classes. Try to keep this in mind when you sit down to create their daily schedule. Taking plenty of breaks throughout the day can help reduce stiffness, minimize daydreaming, and improve concentration.

Catch Up With Friends

Connections with others are very important for your children's development, and the best part about school is the friendships that are made, so be considerate with this need. Try to schedule socially-distanced playdates or utilize the technology in your hands to connect your children with those they miss the most.

Staying Strong

Sure, it may seem like a never-ending challenge, but with the tips above, you and your children will find immeasurable success. Good luck and happy learning!
