5 Things to Do to Get Ready to Go Back-to-School

By Virginia Laird

With summer half over, many teachers and students are not ready to begin thinking about going back-to-school, much less purchasing school supplies. While buying the necessities for school can be as easy as heading to the store armed with a list provided by the school, preparing mentally for school to get back in session can be more difficult. If you are struggling to get yourself or your student(s) motivated for the big day, try these tips.

Begin Your Routine Now

Try not to procrastinate any longer with getting back on schedule. Believe it or not, getting up early and having breakfast can lead to a more productive day. For this to happen, it may be necessary to insist on the school year bedtimes as well. Most certainly, the first couple of weeks getting back into routine can be a struggle.

Insist on a Bedtime

As a night owl, a bedtime is something I find difficult, but I know it is necessary. Making certain to get enough sleep is vital in attitude, as well as a person’s ability to function the next day.

Start Planning for Labor Day

Need a little something to get excited about as school approaches? Plan a family activity or outing for Labor Day weekend. Although the kids may not be looking forward to school starting, they will be looking forward to this excitement.

Buy a New Outfit … or Two

There is no need to purchase an entire wardrobe or a week’s worth of new clothes. However, having a new shirt, shoes, or bag to take or wear to school can help fuel the good thoughts and feelings about heading back to the classroom.

Have an Afterschool Plan

Many people focus on having a morning and bedtime routine during the school year. It can be equally important to have a slight routine for after school. Research suggests that a great number of children thrive when a plan is in place.

If all of these suggestions are not for you and your family, select just a couple to implement. You may notice the grief of back-to-school change to excitement as it approaches. May your students be blessed with great teachers. And if you are a teacher, may you be blessed for your time, compassion, and sacrifices in the name of your students.
