By Virginia Laird
This is the time of year many look forward to: The holidays are near and visits from beloved friends and family will soon be in full swing. With so much joy it can be hard to focus on preventing the harmful germs which can run amuck. The flu virus is one guest most would rather have stay away from such fun times with family and friends. Healthcare professionals encourage those preparing for large gatherings and travel to take some precautions in an effort to prevent the sharing and spreading of the flu, including:
- Make sure to clean your home daily
- Don’t touch your face
- Get some exercise
Make Sure to Clean Your Home Daily
Practicing good hygiene habits can include cleaning your home daily. If you really want to prevent getting the flu, which can force you out of commission for a week or more, make sure to take a few minutes each day to clean and sanitize your home. It does not need to be a massive job. Simply using antibacterial wipes on the surfaces and doorknobs of your home can help keep illness, and the flu, at bay.
Don’t Touch Your Face
Germs enter the body through the mouth and nose. Putting your hands on your face is one way to increase your odds of getting the flu or other illnesses. Flu season can be harsh. Help decrease the chances of having it take over your home by washing your hands prior to touching your face. Or better yet, try not to touch your face at all.
Get Some Exercise
Getting exercise not only helps to burn calories, but it also helps the body stay healthy. As you exercise the body is able to release stress, burn energy, and build cardio. Exercising also gives a boost to the immune system. To help prevent falling victim to the flu this season, maintain routine exercise. If you do not have a routine, a brisk walk through the neighborhood can offer a body the same benefits.
While there is no sure thing to prevent the flu from taking over your life this time of year, these tips can help drastically decrease your odds. The next time you head to the supermarket, stock up on antibacterial wipes, which can make cleaning your home a bit easier. You will be glad you did!
