Exercise Can Be Exciting

By Tom Herrin

One of the reasons that many people give for failing to exercise is that they find it to be boring.  They just can't get into a routine in which they spend a lot of time doing repetitive activities.  For some, this is the kind of structure they do well with.  Others like to feel a little more spontaneous.  Activities that allow us more freedom to be ourselves and create as we go may be a little more motivating.  If you can't think of any, they are easy to find as the list is almost endless.  Some are fairly mild and slow-paced while others require nerve and determination.

Are You Familiar with Birding?

Most of us have heard of birdwatching.  At one time, it was pretty well stereotyped, and we may have pictured those who participated in it with shorts, camera, and a notepad.  With all of the available technology today, a lot of what we need may be contained in our phones.  We can look up references, take pictures, and make notes.  As you do this, you need to move around to keep up with the correct position in order to see.

Learn New Dances

You may have never taken a dance class because you just couldn't imagine it.  They are not what you may think.  Dance classes can be a lot of fun.  There are all kinds of varieties from square dancing to ballroom dancing.  Many of these have clubs that dance weekly at various places.  An hour or so of dancing can do plenty for physical condition.  What is even better is if you have your own partner, it can be an enjoyable date night as well.  My wife and I often dance at home to two or three songs.  Any of this should fall into the category of moderate exercise, at the very least.

How About Rock Climbing?

At first, you may think that rock climbing is something for the seriously adventurous.  That isn't quite the case as there are lots of places to do rock climbing.  You simply need to have good shoes and be dressed for the occasion.  Many parks or natural areas rent equipment, and they may offer classes, too.  One thing is for sure, you will feel like you are outside of the box, and it can be a good workout.
