3 Tips for Losing Weight in Winter

By Genevieve Cunningham

Winter is such a great time of year. There’s just something magical about the crisp air, the snow, and the prospect of beginning a brand new year. But winter is also a struggle sometimes … especially when it comes to weight loss. Losing weight is tough enough, but add some cold weather into the mix, and it’s a serious battle. But it can be done! If you want to lose a few pounds this winter, take a look at these tips to help you be successful.

Stick to Water

It’s tempting to reach for the sugar loaded coffee, hot chocolate, or other calorie laden drinks during the cool winter months, but this is one of the worst things that you can do for your health … and your waistline. While it’s perfectly OK to indulge from time to time, it’s best to stick to water as much as possible. Water is zero calories, and it also hydrates the body, thus keeping every system functioning more efficiently. If you can muster a little willpower, drinking water is a great way to lose weight at any time of the year.

Get in Some Sweat Sessions

It’s cold. At this time of year, it’s tempting to turn on the TV, cozy up under a blanket, and stay there until the sun peeks through in the spring. But if you really want to lose weight, you have to get moving. Try to fit in at least four workouts per week. If it’s too cold for outdoor exercise, join a local gym. If you can brave the cold, layer up your clothing and have a little fun. If you can keep moving during this time of year, you’ll be a little ahead of the game when the air starts getting warm again.

Factor the Holidays

This is the time of year when the holidays are in full force. From Halloween all the way to Valentine’s Day (and maybe even Easter!), the goodies are constantly accessible. While you certainly can’t snack for months on end, it’s OK to factor in some goodies during the holiday season. Pick your high calorie days, and know in advance that you’ll be breaking the rules on these specific times. If you plan for it, you can make better decisions the rest of the time, and still meet your fitness goals by the time it’s all said and done.

The winter is one of the hardest times to lose weight. The clothes are big and comfy, the weather makes us want to stay indoors, and the comfort food is amazing! But summer bodies are made in winter. If you want to lose a few pounds this winter and get your body moving toward better health, just use these tips as soon as today.
