At-Home Remedies for Beating Insomnia

By Genevieve Cunningham

Everything in life becomes more difficult when you can’t sleep. Work is harder. Dealing with stressful situations is harder. Even getting up and moving in the morning is harder! But perhaps even more difficult than these tasks is actually finding the sleep that you’re missing. Once insomnia hits, it can feel like it’s never going away. And nothing is more frustrating than an ongoing, ever present lack of sleep. So what can you do? While some people finally give up and opt for sleeping pills, many others aren’t interested in the slightly controversial medicine. Instead, natural remedies are preferred. But what does that mean? If you’re having trouble sleeping, take a look at these natural methods for beating insomnia and getting the sleep you need.

Focus on Stress Relief

If you’re suffering from large amounts of stress, it’s definitely affecting your sleep. Stress can make your body ache, give you headaches, and of course, cause insomnia. So how can you lower stress levels? You need to incorporate some stress reducing activities. Exercise, a long walk, sitting in nature, meditation, and engaging in a hobby are all great ways to unwind. Perform one or more of these in the evening before bedtime, and it may lower your stress levels enough to allow some sleep.

Use Soothing Foods and Drinks

Getting more sleep might come down to what you’re putting into your body. If you need more sleep, eat and drink foods that promote it. Have some warm milk, some gentle tea, or eat something sleep inducing, such as cherries. You really are what you eat, so if you want to bring about sleep, you must consume foods and drinks that help

Adjust Your Habits

Changing your habits is hard, but it’s worth it if you really want to get some sleep. Sometimes it’s not enough to just change your bedtime habits. Sometimes you have to adjust your habits all day long. Are you waking up early? Maybe you should start. Are you getting any exercise? You should be. Are you eating a healthy diet? It’s time to make that change, too. The healthier your habits, the more likely you are to get the sleep you need when the nighttime rolls around.

Getting more sleep can definitely be a challenge, but it’s worth the effort. A lack of sleep can be severely damaging to overall health, and it can simply make you feel crummy, too. Use these tips to beat insomnia right in the comfort of your own home. With a little patience, a little trial and error, and a lot more sleep, you may be able to improve your health and feel better than ever before you know it.
