Need a Nap? Here's Why You Should Indulge

By Genevieve Cunningham

As babies and children, naps are life. Though fighting them off is a common theme among kids, they are necessary for healthy growth and happy living. As we get older, the concept of naps falls by the wayside. In fact, taking a nap as an adult is seen as one of two ways: weird or a luxury. But what if slowing down and taking regular naps could actually improve our health? Wouldn't it be worth it? If you like the sound of an afternoon nap, take a look at why you should indulge the urge and get some shut-eye.

For Energy

Energy is the most obvious reason to take a nap, and a lack of energy is why most people consider a nap anyway. A nap can help fight fatigue and rebuild energy. We need eight hours of sleep at night, but we don't always get it. Taking a nap allows us to catch up just a bit. Even a small half-hour nap can restore our energy and give us a little boost to finish our day strong.

For Focus

When we're feeling too tired, we often lose the ability to focus. We just can't pay attention to the task. Getting some sleep is like a reset for the brain. It's called a power nap. Why? Because it revitalizes your mind and body to make it the rest of the day. If you're struggling to focus on work or school or anything else, catch a little nap and see whether it makes a difference in your ability to get things done.

For Better Sleep

It sounds counterproductive, right? But it works! When you're too exhausted, it actually prevents your ability to sleep. It's like being so tired that your body can't even relax. For some, a little nap helps balance them out. It gives them just enough of a rest to prevent full on exhaustion, but it's not so much that they can't sleep later. Get a nap to really improve your chances of better rest every night.

Sometimes we just need more rest. And honestly, taking a nap can feel really good! If your body needs it, don't stress over adding it into your daily schedule. Naps can be lifesavers, so grab a blanket and a comfy spot and enjoy.
