Social Activities May Provide Better Exercise

By Tom Herrin

Many people are in need of more socializing.  In today’s world, most tend to stay so busy with their own everyday lives that they seem to isolate themselves from those around them.  Gone are the days for so many when everyone knew their neighbors and visited with them on a regular basis. Since people are going in so many different directions, they may not even cross paths with others in their community.  For those who would like to address this issue as well as get in a little exercise, taking up some kind of organized dancing can be a help. Square dancing is one of those activities that may have lost some of its visibility in many communities but still offers a lot of fun as well as exercise.

It Can Be Good Exercise

For those in need of regular exercise without the monotonous grind that so often seems to come with it, square dancing can offer a nice change of pace.  Whether it is learning while taking classes or actually dancing, there is plenty of movement involved. According to the Mayo Clinic in one study, square dancing for half an hour may help burn as many as 400 calories.  This is comparable to walking, swimming, or some similar activities.

It May Deter Dementia

According to one study, older people who participated in square dancing found it to be effective in helping to resist the effects of dementia.  Apparently going through the moves as people followed the instructions had some way of improving the neurological functions of the body. There are plenty of people looking for ways to protect against this kind of problem that has become so common, especially in the aging population.

It Can Help Improve Social Connections

When you spend time with others in a common activity, you soon develop some feelings of comradery.  Sharing interests is one of the best ways to build friendships. Many square dancing groups become places where families gather.  This means that children and adults alike make new friends. It can give them something to look forward to each week as they plan to attend.  Relieving stress is another byproduct of such activities. It is pretty good combination that can provide exercise, mental workout, and stress relief at the same time.  You may find it a good change of pace.
