Avoiding Bread Is Not Necessary for Healthy Meals

By Tom Herrin

As we work to keep ourselves healthy and in good condition, we often look for things to avoid as well as to add to our diet.  At one time, many people thought bread was an essential part of any good diet.  As times changed and we began to process out many of the healthiest parts of bread, people became concerned about the potential risks of eating bread.  About 100 years ago, white bread made its appearance on the market.  With it came an increase of colon cancers, so there was a considerable amount of concern about eating it.  Today we are fortunate to have lots of healthy options available in the kinds of bread we can buy at the store.

Have You Eaten Rye Bread?

Quite a few years ago, we began to buy rye bread to eat with certain meats as a sandwich.  It became our bread of choice with those meats.  Rye bread definitely has a unique taste.  It is believed to lower cholesterol and possibly improve insulin resistance.  It is generally low in sugar.  It has also shown to reduce hunger for a longer period of time for some.  It may be a pretty decent choice to have as an addition to your menu.

Multigrain Bread May Packed With Nutrients

There are many kinds of bread made from different varieties of grains.  Whole wheat is pretty popular.  Multigrain bread is often made from a variety of grains.  They may or may not contain whole grains so careful reading of the label is important.  If you find one that has the ingredient you are looking for, it can be a great food to add to your meals.  Many of these breads have lots of nutrients.  Choosing one with some whole grains can be a big plus.  Multigrain bread may have more protein than most other kinds and can fill an important need in a healthy diet.

Choose Wisely

When you look for bread that is healthy, the more information you can get, the better.  Reading the labels is a great way to gather nutrition information.  We want bread that has as many vitamins and essential nutrients as possible.  Whole grains can be a big plus.  Another important thing to have in a good bread is one that tastes good.  None of us looks forward to having a meal with bread that is difficult to choke down.  Make good choices and enjoy your meal.
