Amazing Facts About Your Heart

By Sara Butler

You may not pay a lot of attention to the old ticker on a daily basis, but it’s actually a pretty cool organ. This muscle does a lot of work every single day, pumping gallons of blood to every einch of your body. There’s no time like the present to gain a bigger appreciation for your heart, so here are a few facts about your heart you may not know!

It Works Hard

Your heart began beating about four weeks after you were conceived, and it never stops or takes a break. Do you remember that old wives' tale about your heart skipping a beat when you sneeze? Not true! Your heart simply doesn’t stop until you die.

Your heart beats roughly 100,000 times every day, which adds up to 40 million times a year. If you live to be 75, this means your heart will beat an average of 3 billion times. That heart sure has a lot of … heart. Or persistence.

It’s Electric

Your body is the original electric car, and your heart the original electric engine. Your heart has its own electrical supply in the muscle that is controlled by its natural pacemaker called the sinoatrial node. This node sends signals for your heart to beat.

It’s Powerful

Your heart pumps blood to every single cell in your body (well, except the corneas). That amounts to about 75 trillion cells that are all supplied by your relatively small heart. When you’re at rest, it only takes about eight seconds for blood to go from your heart to your brain and back, and only six seconds to travel from your heart to your lungs and back again. Getting all the way to your toes and back? That takes about 16 seconds. Crazy!

It Goes the Distance

On an average day, your heart pumps blood through the equivalent of 12,000 miles of blood vessels. That means your heart pumps four times the distance of California to New York. In fact, if you laid out every vessel in your body end to end, it would circle the earth twice.

Heart Disease Can Impact Anyone

The biggest killer of Americans of all ages today is heart disease, but many people still think of it as an affliction of old age. According to the National Institutes of Health, obese children as young as the age of 8 have been found to have thickened heart walls, a predecessor to heart disease. That’s why getting active and healthy with your entire family is so important.
