Managing Chronic Pain with Chiropractic
By Debra Rodzinak
In the past, patients who suffered with chronic back pain simply had very few choices regarding pain management. Treatments that involved surgery or handfuls of pain medicine were often the only alternative offered. However, times have changed and so have the choices given to patients.
Treatment Options
For patients who do not want to undergo the painful route of surgery or the other problems that can arise from pain medicines, there are several treatment options that are natural. These include, but are not limited to:
- Ice Therapy
- Heat Therapy
- Exercise
- Massage
- Chiropractic
Ice and Heat Therapy
Ice therapy involves using ice to decrease swelling and inflammation to the affected area. Ice should only be applied for 10 minutes at the time. Some experts recommend switching from ice to heat therapy periodically. Heat therapy involves using heat to promote healing and blood flow to the affected area. Many people have reported pain relief when using both.
Exercise
For patients who struggle with back pain due to a misalignment of the spine, exercise can strengthen the muscles that support the spine and lead to pain relief. Over time, as the spinal and abdominal muscles are strengthened, these supportive muscles work better to give the spine and joints proper alignment. Many times, when a spine is out of alignment, pain may not be limited to the back; it can form in the arms, legs, and shoulders. Headaches can also be caused by spinal misalignment.
Massage
When muscles tighten up, are overstretched, or are injured, they do not work as intended. If the muscles that are not working properly are supporting the spine, pain can actually develop in many areas of the body. A massage can provide tension relief and promote blood flow to help tight or injured muscles recover and work properly.
