Boost Your Health With the Fruits of Fall

By Paul Rothbart

Fall is a favorite time of year for many people. The heat and humidity of summer give way to cooler, more comfortable temperatures. The leaves change into beautiful colors. It's a time of fun holidays with family and friends. It's also harvest season. Produce planted in spring and nurtured all summer is ready to be picked and turned into delicious meals. There's nothing quite like fresh fruits and vegetables. They taste great and are also nutritious. Two of the major fruits of fall, apples and pears, are also two of the most healthy.

Health Benefits of Apples

Apples come in many varieties and all of them are loaded with healthy nutrients and compounds. A medium apple contains 3 grams of fiber. Fiber can help with weight loss by making you feel full. It is also helpful in the prevention of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Apples contain a significant amount of Vitamin C, a nutrient that boosts the immune system and helps fight illness. Another healthy component of apples is the flavonoids they contain. These plant substances help feed healthy bacteria to promote gut health and also fight free radicals in the body that can cause cellular damage and lead to chronic disease.

Health Benefits of Pears

Every bit as healthy as apples, pears offer a somewhat sweeter flavor, a softer texture, and some variety in your fall fruits. Like apples, pears contain Vitamin C and plenty of fiber. They too are good for gut health and the immune system. The flavonoids in pears act as anti-inflammatories and reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. Pears contain anthocyanin, a plant compound that research has linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

Ways to Enjoy Apples and Pears

Both apples and pears are versatile foods that can be used in many ways. They are excellent in desserts such as pies, cakes, and crumbles. They pair nicely with cinnamon and other fruits and even each other. You can make jams and jellies with them and for a tasty beverage, apple cider and pear nectar both fill the bill. Both are tasty in a fruit salad or spread with peanut butter. One of the best ways to enjoy a tasty apple or pear is to just eat it as is. They have plenty of flavor on their own.

When fall comes around, it's apple and pear time. Two popular and delicious fruits that are also very healthy. Stop by a local orchard or farmers market before the season ends.
