Understanding Alert Systems Should Be Family Projects
By Tom Herrin
Most people watch with considerable interest or empathy when disasters occur. The plight of others in distress is disconcerting as well as depressing. When there are large multiple disasters with many people affected, it can leave quite an impression. A lot of people try to make an effort to contribute financially or physically, but perhaps one of the best things they can do is make a plan for themselves. When more people are prepared for these kinds of events, the burden may be lifted and less will be required of first responders. If families will work together, they can make an effective plan that can help make decisions in advance.
Having Supplies Is Critical
People need to plan for the unexpected. Some of the recent disasters have shown that food and water supplies are not unlimited. In the Beaumont, Texas floods, the water treatment plants were damaged and no drinking water was available. Bottled water had to be brought in quickly in order to provide for the population. In some disasters, shipping is not available due to circumstances, and people tend to panic or create runs on the limited supplies. A needs assessment for the family could help to improve their perspective.
Plan For Evacuation
When situations become so dangerous that public agencies call for people to evacuate, there is little time to get things together. A good list should be formulated and a plan instituted. It is wise to have some kind of container for each family member that can be picked up and carried out quickly. Bottled water, ready-to-eat food, first aid supplies, and copies of important documents should be included. Everyone should also be well versed in the meanings of all of the alerts available.
Know The Key Resources
The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, has made good information available for the general public. Following the guidelines and suggestions they have can be a great way to begin development of a plan. Every family member should know and understand the plan. This can help to avoid the bad decisions that can get many people in dangerous situations in a hurry. Having a plan and understanding the alert systems can be a great undertaking as a family, and it is one that could actually be a life or death factor.
