How to Survive a Summer Barbecue!

One of the best things about summer is getting together with friends and family to enjoy a cookout. But if you’re trying to be healthy, the summer barbecue can be your downfall! Here’s how you can prepare to survive the summer barbecue season and still meet your health goals.

Choose Protein Wisely

Look for the leanest protein option you can find. Turkey, pork, or chicken are great alternatives to beef – and they offer less cholesterol and fat too. Grilled chicken breast with no skin is going to be the best choice, followed by a grilled chicken thigh.

If those ribs or steak are truly calling your name, it’s OK to have a serving. Just try to limit yourself to a single serving, which is about the size of the palm of your hand. That can still keep you within healthy boundaries but let you indulge a bit in your grilled meat fantasies.

Fill Your Plate

Another step in cookout success is to fill your plate – with fresh fruits and vegetables, that is. Before you hit any other option, pile your plate high with fruit and veggies so you can fill up on those before the options that aren’t quite as healthy.


Baked beans can actually be a good choice on the buffet, as long as portions are kept in check. Beans are generally going to be filled with fiber and protein, plus they’re a great complex carbohydrate option. Plus, they’re pretty flavorful. You just need to be careful because baked beans can be full of fat and calories. If there’s a bean salad on the menu, go for that first.

Corn on the Cob Classic

Corn is technically a vegetable, and in the summer it doesn’t get more vege-licious than corn on the cob. It can be grilled or boiled; as long as it’s not soaked in butter and salt, then you should be good. As is, one cob of corn is equal to two servings of vegetables. It’s also high in fiber.

 Go Bun-Free

Burgers can be indulged in, but try it without a bun in order to get rid of refined carbs. If eating a burger with a fork doesn’t do it for you, then you can try wrapping it in lettuce so you can pick it up or try just half a bun.

Eating right and having fun can go well together. You just have to work to make good choices with what you have in front of you!
