Ways to Reduce Back Pain When You Wake Up

By Sara Butler

There’s nothing worse than waking up feeling refreshed and ready to face the day, roll out of bed, and then bam! Back pain strikes. Everyone has had a morning like that and if you live with back pain, then you probably have quite a few mornings that turn out that way. Luckily, the chiropractors at The Joint have a few pieces of advice to help you sleep and wake more comfortably.

Find a Good Position

Back pain in the morning is often a result of how you slept at night. Certain sleeping positions can put a lot of stress and strain on the back, which makes finding the right position key to waking up without a lot of pain. It’s a good idea to discuss your sleeping position with chiropractors at The Joint so they can show you how it may be impacting trigger points on your body and placing a strain on your spine.

Utilize Pillows

If you suffer from back pain, then it’s a good idea to harness the supportive power of pillows. A pillow at your neck helps to keep your spine aligned with the rest of your body -- just make sure you head isn’t elevated. Then, use a pillow under your knees if you’re on your back or between your knees if you’re on your side to help take some pressure off your lower back. If you sleep on your stomach -- well, you should stop. Discuss some strategies with the chiropractor to help you break your stomach-sleeping habit.

Get a Good Mattress

A bad mattress can be the cause of some bad back pain. If your mattress isn’t supportive and you’re waking up feeling as if you just went 10 rounds in the octagon with Ronda Rousey, then you may want to look into getting a new mattress.

If the funds aren’t available to buy a good quality mattress, then discuss things you can do in the meantime to offer support to your spine as you sleep. They may have some ideas that can help until a new mattress can be purchased.

See the Chiropractor

One of the best ways to deal with back pain is to regularly see your chiropractor for adjustments to help remove joint restriction and dysfunction and help your body to heal itself. They may even throw in a few stretches and exercises to help!
