Sinus Problems? See Your Chiropractor!
By Sara Butler
Millions of people a year are impacted by sinus problems, according to the National Institutes of Health. These problems can range from inflammation to infection of the sinuses. If you find yourself struggling with sinus problems, you may be surprised to learn that your chiropractor can help. Here’s how regular visits to a chiropractor may help you solve your sinus problems once and for all!
What is Sinusitis?
Have you ever had a cold that just doesn’t seem to want to go away? Well, it’s likely that was more than a cold, it was sinusitis. The symptoms of sinusitis include:
- Pain in the face
- Pain in the ear
- Pain in the forehead
- Pain in the sinuses
- Sore throat
- Problems sleeping
You have sinuses in order to help filter, warm, and moisten the air you breathe. These hollow cavities around your eyes, behind your nose and in your cheekbones contain mucus, and if that mucus is blocked from draining normally then you can fall victim to sinusitis.
Sinusitis can be caused by a sinus infection, which often starts out as a cold that then infects the sinuses. These infections can be caused by a bacteria or a virus. Generally, symptoms that last longer than 10 days without improvement are almost always caused by bacteria, while symptoms less than 10 days that steadily improve are caused by a virus.
Some people develop chronic sinusitis, a prolonged inflammation of the sinus. Generally lasting 12 weeks or longer, if you suffer from chronic sinusitis you need to discuss it with your chiropractor!
How Chiropractic Can Help
Chiropractic deals with sinusitis in a few different ways. The primary way is that it helps to keep your immune system healthy and your body functioning optimally so you can avoid illness in the first place. By helping resolve misalignments in your spine your chiropractor helps keep your nervous system functioning well.
If you are having problems with drainage in your sinuses, your chiropractor can specifically help with that, as well. Quite often, drainage problems are caused by subluxations of the vertebrae in the neck or upper back. Once the proper function is restored, then your body will be able to function as it should and flush away mucus and germs on its own.
