The Impact of Sleep Deprivation

By Sara Butler

Many people assume chiropractors are only concerned with the spine, but that’s simply not true. Chiropractors are interested in the overall health and wellness of their patients and believe when the body is working at its best, then good health will be experienced. Getting enough sleep at night is a part of the overall package of health and wellness. If you’re not getting enough, then your body will not be able to function optimally. Sleep is just like air, food, and water – it’s a necessity. Here’s some information to help you understand just how important sleep is.

The Central Nervous System

When you don’t get the seven to nine hours of nightly sleep recommended by the National Sleep Foundation, you become a little more sleep deprived every day. It impacts your central nervous system in a few major ways too.

When you sleep at night, it’s like a reset button for your brain. If not rested enough, your brain has trouble functioning properly, leaving you unable to perform cognitive tasks at the level you may need. It can also make it more difficult to concentrate, learn, and utilize short-term memory recall.

In the most severe sleep deprivation cases, a person can suffer from mania, depression, hallucinations, paranoia, and even suicidal thoughts. Sleep deprivation can also make a person dangerous behind the wheel of a car or another vehicle.

The Immune System

The central nervous system isn’t the only casualty of sleep deprivation. When the body isn’t rested, then the immune system can’t function at its best, causing a dip in a number of cells the body has to fight infection. So, it’s much easier to become sick when you’re sleep deprived and it’ll take the body longer to recover from the illness too. It also raises your risk of developing a chronic disease such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The Respiratory System

When the immune system is compromised, so is the respiratory system. Sleep deprivation can allow serious viruses to take hold in your respiratory system such as flu or the common cold. If you already suffer from a chronic lung disease, then your symptoms can get worse when you’re not getting enough sleep at night.
