Chiropractic Help for Headaches

By Sara Butler

Headaches are something almost everyone experiences at some point. They may happen to you occasionally or frequently. Some headaches are a dull, aching pain while others are intense and sharp. Headaches have several different causes, but almost all of them have the same result – they disrupt your life. That may simply mean it’s difficult for you to concentrate or it could mean you have to lie down in a room that is completely dark. However headaches impact your life, there may be help at the chiropractor’s office.

What Triggers Your Headaches?

Since there are many different types of headaches, then it stands to reason there are just as many different things that can trigger a headache. The most common triggers include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Stress
  • Bright lights
  • Caffeine
  • Muscle tension
  • Loud noises
  • Foods
  • Spinal joint restrictions or dysfunctions

It’s pretty common for people to experience headaches due to tension in the muscles of the neck or spinal joint dysfunctions or restrictions caused by poor posture and repetitive motions. The best thing you can do is try to identify the things triggering your headaches and then treat the underlying cause – with the help of your chiropractor, of course.

How to Prevent Headaches

The chiropractors at The Joint can help you understand why you may be experiencing headaches, but there are also a few things you can do to help yourself. When you’re at work, furiously typing away at your computer, set a reminder on your phone or computer that to help you remember to switch positions every 30 minutes or so. If you have no choice but to stay in one position for long periods of time, then make sure to do some gentle stretches of your shoulder, neck, and upper back at least once an hour to help you avoid tension headaches.

If you clench your teeth, then that’s another tension-inducing activity that can lead to headaches. Try to take measures to catch yourself doing it and stop. Exercise can also cause headaches, especially high impact exercise. You may want to switch to an exercise with a lower impact to see if that makes a difference.

And don’t forget, hydration is important! Drink water all day long to help you stay hydrated and further reduce your chances of experiencing headaches.

See Your Chiropractor

If the joints in your spine are experiencing restriction or dysfunction, then a headache may be the result. See your chiropractor in order to make sure everything is working as it should. This is a small thing you can do that can have a major impact on frequent headaches.

If you have questions about your headaches, then discuss them your chiropractor at The Joint!
