Keeping Cool During a Warm Weather Workout
By Sara Butler
When the weather is nice out, there's nothing that compares to a great workout. The problem is that staying cool in the heat can present a bit of a challenge. You don't have to stay inside to get your workout done. All you need to do is follow a few simple tips to help keep you cool outside in the warm weather.
Get Your Timing Right
When it's hot out, you have to choose the coolest parts of the day to exercise outside, such as in the morning or in the evening. You should definitely avoid an activity between noon and 3 p.m., as that's the hottest part of the day and runs the highest risk of your getting overheated.
Don't forget to do what you'd normally do with a workout no matter what time of the day -- warm-up and cool down!
Drink Plenty of Water
You should drink water before, during, and after your outside exercise session. Even if you don't feel thirsty, it's important to realize that you're going to be losing a lot of fluid when it's hot out and those need to be replenished. Make sure to carry a water bottle or hydration pack with you when you're working out outside in order to help you stay hydrated.
Of course, drinking water isn't the only way to stay hydrated. You can also eat fresh fruits and vegetables to get fluids and drink water infused with fruits or herbs.
Wear the Right Gear
When it's hot out, you should wear light-colored, lightweight clothes when you're working out. If they are made of moisture wicking fabrics, even better. Don't forget about your feet, too. Wear lightweight and breathable socks and shoes that will allow your feet to stay cool.
Don't neglect the rest of your body, either. Make sure to wear sunblock and always make sure you have a hat and sunglasses to protect your eyes that allow you to see in order to help you stay safe.
There are a ton of warm weather activities you can do. Swimming is always a hit when it's hot out, but you can participate in outdoor yoga or go on a hike too. Find something you like to do and get outside to enjoy this fabulous weather while you still can. Just remember to make sure you're taking the heat into account when you do!
