Why You Need an Electronic Detox

By Genevieve Cunningham

I love my tablet. It accompanies me to bed, stays in my purse when I’m on the go, and is the perfect distraction during long office waits or boring meetings. Chances are good that you have a device that you feel similarly about. We all love technology … the TV, our phones, laptops … we love it all! But even with all of the good that these devices bring into our lives, we definitely need an electronic detox from time to time. Take a look at these great reasons to unplug and take a little vacation from the screen.

It Can Give You Headaches

All of that time in front of a screen causes your eyes to strain. And even if you don’t notice the strain, it very often leads to headaches. Those who spend large amounts of time in front of the TV or computer tend to suffer from more eye discomfort and more headaches. While this might seem like a small sacrifice, it can eventually lead to daily discomfort if you don’t take the time to step away and get a little break from the screen.

It Can Exacerbate Depression

If you’re already susceptible to depression or if you’re already feeling a little down, the last thing that you need is time in front of an electronic device. The colors, the eye strain, the general boredom that can be found online only makes depression worse for a lot of people. Instead, take a break, go for a walk, do something active and fun, and just mentally unwind from the constant engagement that comes in front of your typical vices.

It’s Isolating

Yes, it’s true that you can connect with people all over the world when you use a technological device. But it also disconnects you from those around you. People might be in a group, but none of them are actually talking face to face. They’re all looking at their phones, texting, browsing, playing games, and wasting time. This leads to a feeling of isolation, even if you’re surrounded by people. Give the phone a break, look up, and reconnect with the people in your life.

We all love technology. We love the instant access, the endless knowledge, and the ability to talk to people across the world. And no one is suggesting that you skip out on technology completely. But taking a break now and again might save your mental and physical health and keep you grounded in a world full of digital chaos.
