Good and Bad: How Technology Rules Our Lives

By Genevieve Cunningham

Modern technology is one of the greatest inventions of our time. We all love the convenience and luxury of modern technology. We love having the newest phone. We love instant communication. We love the ease that technology presents in our lives. But it would be foolish to praise technology without also acknowledging the negative side. Though technology can be a good thing, it can also present challenging issues. If you love technology and want to keep it in your life with your health intact, take a look at the good and bad of modern technology, plus some tips for finding balance.

The Good

There are so many good aspects of technology. For starters, technology makes life easier. It's easier to store things, find information, and access things quickly and easily. It helps stifle boredom. It gives us instant communication with others. There's no denying the good that technology brings into our lives, and if we're being completely honest, we wouldn't want to do without these aspects ever again.

The Bad

Of course, it's also important to remember that technology has some downsides, some of which are the exact same as the benefits. For example, instant communication can be so good, but it can also be a bad thing. There is such a thing as being too accessible. It prevents us from ever being able to unplug and decompress. Technology also encourages inactivity. It makes us a little lazier. It sometimes makes things too easy. And of course, there's the health aspect. Too much technology can be bad for physical and mental well-being, and if we're not careful, it can cause a steep decline in health that's really hard to reverse.

The Balance

We're not going to stop using technology in order to avoid the bad side effects, nor should we. Instead, we have to learn a little balance. It's OK to use technology, but not all day every day. Set limits for yourself. And then also put days on your schedule where you completely unplug. If you can find some balance in your technology use, you can enjoy the benefits while keeping your health in tip-top condition.

There's no doubt that technology can take over our lives. It is a huge factor in our lives. We make entire decisions based solely on technology! But we can't let it overtake our health and well-being. Find some balance and be smart about your technology decisions so that you can enjoy all it has to offer with minimal negative side effects in the future.
