3 Habits to Help with Lower Back Pain

By Genevieve Smith

Lower back pain, or LBP, is an issue that has plagued millions of people worldwide. Not only is it terribly uncomfortable, it is also the costliest work disability in the US, leading to missed workdays, depression, interrupted sleep and possibly high treatment costs. Regular visits to your chiropractor can address your lower back pain, and a multidisciplinary approach may help you find further relief. Incorporate these habits to work on your lower back pains.

Yoga It Up

Yoga is a stretching-intensive exercise that helps your body stay limber and your mind feel at ease. The combination of movement with breathing helps reduce tension, so the key is to stay mindful of each breath as you inhale and exhale. Start and end each day with at least five minutes of stretching to help relax your muscles. Check out these yoga stretches targeting lower back tension; make sure to focus on your breath while doing them!

Eat a Well-Rounded Diet

While you should eat what makes you happy, as it turns out, the foods you eat have a surprising impact on your back health. Foods high in sugar, fat and salt can cause inflammation in the body, contributing to back pain. A diet high in calcium, Vitamin D, and omega-3s are good choices for bone-related pain in general, as these minerals, vitamins and fats address healthy bone building and reduction in inflammation.

Toss the Flip Flops

It’s all about the right support for your spine. As convenient as a pair of sandals may be, they are not doing your back any favors. The thin soles don’t provide a cushion between your body and the pavement. Similarly, your cutest pumps may not be terribly helpful either, as they may increase the pressure on your lower spine. Opt for shoes with arch support that feel like they contribute to an even weight distribution for your body.

Lower back pain can seem daunting to navigate as you seek an approach to bring it to an end. With a proper management plan including yoga, a bone-friendly diet, and the proper footwear, you may be well on your way. Perhaps the surest way is to visit with the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic for regular adjustments that keep the spine aligned. Getting care is an enjoyable and stress-free experience. Use their walk-in visits and affordable pricing to your advantage.
