Avoid Blood Pressure Medication by Making Changes

By Tom Herrin

Gaining power over our bodies is not as hard as it may sound.  When people are told that they have some kind of health issues, they often try to avoid the subject, and act as if it doesn't exist.  Some problems certainly require definite treatment and medication.  Much of the time, a healthcare professional will suggest making some lifestyle changes that can help people possibly avoid having to take daily medication.  The problem is that many people simply refuse to see how serious their problem could become and put off changing anything.  This can be a serious mistake.  In many cases, making some small changes may enable them to manage blood pressure and enjoy themselves without having to take medication.

Adopt a Healthier Diet

While food is an essential part of good health, too many people find themselves in a rush much of the time and look for the fastest way to have a meal.  That may be either fast foods or ready-to-eat meals.  Either one tends to have poorer quality ingredients and be high in sodium.  If they must eat fast foods, it is better to learn to read menus closer to see what is a healthier choice.  Avoiding things such as excess salt and fried foods is possible, and many places offer healthier options.  One simply has to read the menu for them.

Watch the Caffeine

Most people enjoy drinking some kind of beverage during their workday.  It is often coffee, but many also drink some kind of soft drink.  A bit part of these contain high amounts of caffeine.  It may serve as a stimulant to keep them alert.  The bad side is that it may raise their blood pressure.  For many, cutting back on these or choosing something that has little or no caffeine may help to lower their blood pressure.  A good test is to drink one of these and check their blood pressure about 30 minutes later.  If it goes up, there is a good chance that they are sensitive to the caffeine.  Making the change in beverages can be an easy fix for these individuals.

We Have the Power

Most of the time, each of us has the ability to keep our blood pressure in a good range, if we just will.  In order to make the right adjustments, we will need to monitor it closely.  Blood pressure monitors for use at home are pretty low cost and easy to use.  We use one at our home, and it is a great tool for taking measurements and changing accordingly.
