Hidden Signs of Dehydration
By Sara Butler
Drinking enough water every day is important to your overall health and wellness. Yet many people don’t drink enough water during the day, depriving their bodies of the fluids it needs to function at its best. If you find that you experience any of the following symptoms, it may mean you’re not getting enough water to stay healthy.
This may seem like a no-brainer, but the danger of dry mouth lies in how you choose to resolve it. Of course, you’re going to reach for something wet, but if that something is sugary soda, then you’re doing more harm than good. When you drink water, it lubricates the membranes of the mouth and throat, helping to keep them moist long after the drink is done. So make sure you’re reaching for water when you feel your mouth is dry.
Many people don’t think about their skin as an organ, but it happens to be the largest organ of the body! Dry skin is one of the earliest warning signs of dehydration, so pay attention to how your skin looks and feels. If you get too dehydrated, then your body won’t be able to sweat normally and that can lead to a host of many other problems. So, drink plenty of water to keep your skin looking and feeling great.
Is it becoming clearer that water impacts more than just your mouth and throat? Well, it should be, because the next stop on the dehydration tour is your eyes! Not getting enough water leads to dry eyes that often look bloodshot. If you don’t have enough water in your body, the ear ducts will dry up, making them unable to replenish the fluid layer that covers your eyes. This is very concerning if you wear contacts every day because it could impact your vision and the health of your eyes in the long run.
Your spinal discs and cartilage are made up of around 80 percent water. So, if you don’t have enough water in your body, then they can’t do their very important job of keeping your bones from grinding together! Ouch! By staying appropriately hydrated, you’re ensuring that your joints can absorb shock and move smoothly as they were meant to.
Make sure you’re getting enough water every day to keep your whole body healthy!
