Got Arthritis? You Still Need to Exercise!

By Donna Stark

Just because you are suffering from arthritis doesn't mean you get to skip your daily workouts. In fact, it may actually mean the exact opposite! Physical activity is needed if you want to maintain the function of your joints, the strength of your muscles, and the state of your health. But it can be hard to know what kind of exercises are safe to do when you aren't feeling your best, right? Well, your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic have three types to recommend. Here they are.

Stretching Exercises

To ease the joint stiffness that is plaguing your body and increase your range of motion, you have to add some stretching exercises into your daily routine. Start your days off on the right foot by stretching as soon as you get out of bed or end them on the right note by stretching before you go to sleep. You can also try something new by joining a fitness class and signing up for yoga. Yoga is a great way to elongate your muscles, decrease stiffness, and improve your flexibility.

Strength Exercises

A sedentary lifestyle can cause your body to lose muscle mass faster than you think, so it's important to keep your body strong. Building the strength of your muscles can help alleviate pain, stabilize joints, and improve mobility, but don't rush into a new program. Start slowly and work your way up to heavier weights over time. If you have any concerns about the safety of the exercises you are doing, ask a professional trainer for help or seek guidance from your primary care doctor. You certainly don't want to make a bad situation any worse!

Endurance Exercises

Sure, you may be focused on your joints right now, but don't forget to give your heart a workout too! After all, if your heart isn't well, everything else will become more difficult to do. So, again, start slowly and build your endurance one step at a time. When dealing with arthritis, your best bet is to choose a low-impact workout since they are generally easier on the joints than others. Some of the most joint-friendly, blood-pumping workouts are walking, swimming, and cycling.

Arthritis and Exercise

Staying committed to exercising while dealing with arthritis does have its challenges, but these challenges aren't anything that can't be overcome. With just a little bit of effort and 30 minutes a day, you can improve the function of your joints and your overall health and wellness in no time!
