Sleep Deprived? Check Your Sleeping Position!
By Donna Stark
You don't need to be a new parent, a late-night studier, or an overworked employee to be suffering from sleep deprivation because sleep deprivation can happen to anybody, but you do need to figure out what the underlying cause is. Why aren't you getting the recommended amount of sleep each night or why is the quality of your sleep not good? Well, have you considered the position you sleep in? Your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic want you to get the rest you need so they have listed some recommendations below. Take a look.
Sleeping on Your Stomach
Stomach sleeping is generally considered to be the worst position to sleep in, but that doesn't stop people from choosing it. If you are a stomach sleeper, putting a pillow under your hips and using a flatter, less fluffy one may help you get some rest because it will help take the strain off your lower back during the night. You can also try pulling one of your legs up closer to your core for more comfort.
Sleeping on Your Side
Side sleeping is a little better than stomach sleeping, but it can still place pressure and strain on your body, most notably on the leg and arm of the side you are sleeping on. And that can lead to numbness and tingling throughout the night. Because of this, you may need to play around with your positions so you can get the best sleep possible. It is also recommended to place a small pillow between your legs so the strain on your back is diminished.
Sleeping on Your Back
Sleeping on your back is one of the best positions to choose for several reasons. Back sleeping helps distribute your weight evenly, minimizes pressure points, and ensures proper alignment of your body, but you still need to invest in a supportive pillow. It can also help to place a rolled towel or pillow under your knees to reduce back strain even more.
Getting the Rest You Need
In addition to the position you sleep in, it is also important to design an environment that is conducive for optimal sleep. Keep your room cool, dark, and quiet. Remove all electronic devices, or if that's not possible, turn them off at least an hour before bed. Last of all, you can always head in to see your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic. They have plenty of other suggestions and treatments that will help you succeed in getting the rest you deserve!
