How to Form Healthy New Habits

By Alexis Mills

When you are trying to break old habits and make new healthy habits, it isn't an easy transition to make. But I do promise that it is possible to take control of your own health and wellness to start making better lifestyle choices. When you are conditioned to make certain decisions, it is hard to step out of them, but this takes giving up unconscious behavior and adopting new, conscious patterns. Your mind will notice the changes you are making and create new habits to replace the old ones. In order to create a new, healthy habit, go step-by-step through the below actions and you will start to see how you can remain committed to wellness as a lifestyle pattern.

Set Goals for Your Health

The first step is to set what your health goals are and what type of habit or habits you are trying to create. Whether it's reaching a goal weight, working out a certain amount of time each week, changing your diet, or lowering stress levels, write it down as specifically as you can. Start thinking about the big picture and what you want to change about your health. Developing this strong vision will help you know exactly what you are striving for.

Identify Harmful Patterns

In order to change what your unhealthy habits are, you need to first identify what they are. Forming new habits aren't easy so it's important to realize what you are trying to avoid as much as what you are trying to achieve.

Set Priorities

Now it's time to see what keeps you from making good health decisions and what feeds making those decisions. Identify exactly what is hard for you in the moment and what your weaknesses are when it comes to achieving your goals. This could be resisting sweets or not able to get enough sleep at night. Then identify what you enjoy when it comes to your health and capture how it feels when you are working toward what you want.

Make Steady Changes

It's important to break down your big goals into smaller changes so that you can see improvements and accomplishments in daily life that you can celebrate. Try making weekly goals that will eventually get you where you want to be. Over time, these baby steps will turn into changing your whole lifestyle.

On average, it takes about 66 days to form a new habit so give yourself the time to adjust to your new behaviors and hopefully you can create a healthier lifestyle that comes naturally.
