Identifying Healthy Relationships
By Rachel Shouse
Every relationship, friend or romantic, is going to have its bumps. There are times, however, when relationships go sour. This is completely normal as everyone changes throughout their life. Identifying problems in a relationship, learning how to fix them, and finding ways to maintain your healthy relationships are all great tools to use when evaluating who you allow in your life.
Identifying Problems in Your Relationships
The type of problems you can run into can vary widely depending on the relationship itself. Whether it's a work, romantic relationship, or friendship there are problems you're going to run into.
Work is a big one. Maintaining healthy work relationships can be difficult. At home you've chosen who you want. At work though you're rather forced to get along or attempt to regardless of personalities.
Romantic relationships can be really hard to manage. Mainly because you're trying to meld yourself into the life of a totally different person. Eventually you're going to step on each other's toes and need to learn how to fix issues.
Friendships are difficult in their own way. The nice thing about friendships though is that you don't need to deal with them day in and day out if that's too much for you. Obviously you should be a good friend, but good friends usually know when a break is needed, on either end.
Learning How to Fix Different Problems
While each relationship is unique, a lot of the same techniques apply. If you notice that you're yelling, arguing, or even getting overly irritated rather frequently you may need to work on some things. One of the best things you can do in any relationship is make sure that you listen. That means listening, not planning a response before you've heard the other person out.
Maintaining Healthy Relationships
It's always nice to be in a good place in your relationships. Of course one might flourish while another one struggles, but that's totally normal. It's actually better that way. You don't want to have to fix a bunch of problems at once. Beyond that though, maintaining your healthy relationships is really important. Make sure you continue to be a good co-worker, significant other, friend, etc.
All relationships take work. It's not limited to marriages or family. Good friendships usually last quite a while. If you happen to also get along with your co-workers consider yourself blessed. Regardless of the type of relationship, make sure you do everything you can. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
