Is Iron Really Necessary?

By Tom Herrin

There are plenty of people who seem to have iron deficiencies.  Some of these appear to be caused by things that could be considered environmental.  Other causes are likely to be genetic.  Whatever the reason people are iron deficient, it can have some serious effects on the body.  It is more common in women than men largely due to the differences in the basics of how the genders themselves differ.  The key thing is that iron is critical in the normal function of the body.  Supplements work for some people while others are able to get a good supply from foods.

Iron Helps The Body Perform Work

One of the primary jobs of iron is to help red blood cells to carry oxygen.  The body works just like everything else in this world.  Oxygen is essential for the body to burn fuel.  It uses oxygen and gives off carbon dioxide just like a fire.  The process of respiration carries oxygen to the cells and carbon dioxide away.  Without a sufficient supply of iron, people will seem to have strength and energy depleted.  They will often show pronounced weakness.  Some people will even have problems with fainting.

Red Meats Are A Prime Source

People who eat a good amount of red meat can usually get enough iron in the diet, unless there is another problem.  Women, especially younger ones, must have a steady supply.  It is important not to confuse protein-rich foods with iron-rich foods.  While many foods have both, they are not one and the same.  Milk is a good example of a high protein food that does not supply iron.  People who drink a lot of milk may still be iron deficient.  Fortunately, many cereals are fortified with iron.

Vitamin C May Be Needed

Many people fail to realize the correlation between iron and Vitamin C.  People may take in plenty of iron and still be unable to use it properly in their bodies.  Vitamin C is needed in order for the body to use iron from plant foods.   This is another example of why balance is so important.  Iron deficiencies should not be taken lightly.  I knew of a male athlete who seemed to be dogging it all of the time.  It never looked like he was trying.  It was discovered that he was very anemic.  It clearly explained why he was unable to run with any intensity.  If you suspect iron deficiency, don’t take it lightly.  Make the necessary adjustments.  You will notice a marked difference.
