Some Foods May Even Help With Dementia

By Tom Herrin

There are a lot of health issues that may be solved with certain foods.  It is common knowledge that some kinds of foods can wreak havoc on health.  High fat foods can contribute to many problems related to obesity, the heart and circulatory system.  Some foods are believed to increase the likelihood of diabetes, and the list goes on.  When people can find foods that can actually improve or protect health, it is worthwhile taking a good look.  One type of foods that has rightfully received attention in recent years is berries.

They Are High in Fiber

The role of fiber in the diet is something that has received increased attention for many reasons.  Fiber is known to aid in digestion.  It can help maintain regularity.  Their high water content can help as well.  In one study, it was shown that fiber can reduce the absorption of calories from many other foods taken at from a meal.  Berries are packed with fiber with blackberries and raspberries topping the list.  These each contain eight grams of fiber in a one-cup serving.  If you are one who watches fiber content, you will recognize that as pretty significant.

The Antioxidants Can Do Several Things

The significance of antioxidants has seemingly been recognized in recent years.  They can reduce inflammation in the body.  They can also help fight, or prevent, some cancers such as those of the mouth, esophagus, breast, and colon.  They may even be associated with the prevention of some common illnesses caused by bacteria or viruses.  Berries seem to be filled with these helpful substances.

It May Help With Some Cognitive Diseases

Diseases that relate to the memory and other mental abilities are believed to respond in a positive way to berries.  While this may not be a proven fact, many feel there are some connections.  It is an interesting possibility that serves as an added incentive for consuming more berries.  Either way, they have a lot of great flavor and are sure to be popular with family members.  Whether they are eaten raw and alone or prepared with something else, they can be a great part of a meal, dessert, or snack.  Try picking up some and see how it works for you and your family.  Leave a few in the fridge and judge for yourself to see if they like them.
