Playing Hockey on Grass Can Build Health
By Tom Herrin
When people are looking for games to play, there is a whole list of things. The traditional ones usually come to mind, but there is a big world out there with games many people either never heard of or never thought of. One that may not have come to mind ever, or at least in a lot of years, is field hockey. That or its indoor companion, gym hockey, can be a lot of fun and a great change of pace. For the parent who wants to do something a little different with the kids, it can really spark their interest.
It Can Be Great for Cardio
Most people think of a lot of work when they think about field hockey, but it can really be done at any pace. There is quite a bit of intermittent activity involved. In other words, it can be done at a slow pace at times with sudden bursts of energy needed at others. It is one of those games that when someone is running, they are working pretty hard. Since the number of players, size of the playing area, and rules in general can vary according to need, it can become any kind of game needed. The point is that there will be enough steady activity to provide some good work for the heart.
It May Improve Balance and Coordination
With the kinds of movement involved in playing, the participants will have to improve their ability to move from side to side as well as attempt to play the ball or puck when they are off balance. This will require a sharpening of their overall balance skills. Anticipation and field of vision will naturally sharpen. After playing this game only few times, there is likely to be a noticeable improvement in both balance and coordination.
It Can Build Teamwork
Whether it is at home, at work, at school, or some other place, teamwork is important. The ability to communicate and work well with others is really important. It is a natural in this sport. When I get out the hockey equipment with a group of kids who had never played, their reaction was often that they had no desire to play. Once the game had begun, everyone was excited and could not get enough of it. It can be a great game for families or a group of friends. The equipment is relatively cheap. Pick some up and you will be amazed at the interest and the improvement in health for everyone.
