All Workouts Do Not Involve Movement
By Tom Herrin
Thinking about working out usually stimulates visions of people moving around and participating in some kind of activity. In order to get the most out of any kind of exercise, the general understanding is that moving is critical. It is true that motion is required for most exercise, but it is possible to work out and develop parts of the body without moving at all, or at least very little. Isometric exercise is one way of improving health while virtually frozen in place. As opposed to isotonic exercise in which movement is so important, the ability to remain in place is a great determiner of success.
It May Help Prevent Muscle Loss as People Age
Losing muscle as people grow older is a pretty significant problem. Without a doubt, general inactivity is a contributing factor. People also tend to be involved in less physically demanding activity as they get older. Workers are often moved to those jobs that seem better suited with people feeling as if those individuals have earned the right to have them. That is not at all wrong, but when people don’t use their muscles, they may lose much of it. Doing isometrics can help build both strength and endurance.
It May Use Time More Efficiently
A lot of people have busy schedules and can barely squeeze in time for working out. Isometrics can be done using only short periods of time. Doing them is a good way to maximize the use of what time is available. People are able to concentrate on certain areas of the body in a few short minutes at a time. The location is not so important either since there is no special equipment needed.
It May Improve Flexibility
Doing isometric exercises can work muscles much like stretching. It can provide muscles the opportunity to be worked against resistance that will not give. This stretches them as it flexes them. Blood flow will be increased in these areas that have been isolated. Some years ago, I did isometrics as a regular practice. It seemed to produce results that were pretty impressive. I was able to increase the muscles that I was working as well as avoid the chance of injury that may occur so often with movement. If you are looking for something to save time and produce results, try isometrics.
