Is Fish a Regular on Your Menu?

By Tom Herrin

Most people have their regulars when it comes to items in their daily diet.  There are obviously all sorts of foods that people eat and like.  Many make their choices based on what is best for their health.  Others simply choose to eat foods that they like and enjoy eating.  It is good when people can do both.  While not everyone likes fish, it is one of the healthiest foods that can be added to a menu.  With a little sampling, most people can find a type of fish they can enjoy.  Having  a serving or two per week can do lots of good things for health.  It just takes a little planning.

It Can Provide Plenty of Nutrients

Fish is high in protein, iodine, vitamins, and minerals.  It is also one of the best sources of Vitamin D.  Some kinds of fish are particularly high in omega-3 fatty acids.  These are known to be a key element in boosting health.  The fish containing these are generally considered cold water fish.  These include tuna, salmon, mackerel, trout, and sardines.  Many studies have found that eating these on a regular basis can pay big dividends for people.

It May Protect the Heart

Lots of people are concerned about the health of their hearts.  This is for good reason because heart disease is a major health issue in this country today.  Many studies have shown that those who eat fish regularly have lower risks of stroke, heart attacks, and death from heart disease.  One of those studies found that among 40,000 men who ate fish once per week, they had a 15 percent lower risk of heart disease.

It May Help Improve Sleep

Lots of us have problems with sleep.  There may be all kinds of reasons.  In a small study of middle-aged men who ate salmon three times per week, they had an improvement in both sleep and daily function.  The general belief is that this is due to the Vitamin D contained in the fish.  It seems that over 40 percent of the population is deficient in this important vitamin and fish is one of the only foods that can provide a supply.  I know that many of us have difficulty sleeping when we lack a balance in our vitamins.  Even though they are often minor, they can play a big role in our overall health.  Eating fish on a regular basis may make a difference.
