Turn Daily Routine Into Exercise

By Tom Herrin

Everyone has some kinds of things they do each and every day.  It may be something as simple as going to the mailbox, going to the store, or walking the dog.  Many people have a tendency to try to save all the energy they can, but this may be the first mistake they make.  Modern conveniences are great but not always the best thing for everyone involved.  What such advances have done in some cases is added to the deterioration of the human physical condition.  The simple truth is that if people will stop taking the opportunity to cut corners in their activity, they may be able to get enough exercise to get themselves healthier with little extra effort.

Older Adults Often Do Themselves More Harm Than Good

As people age, they sometimes tend to feel that they owe it to themselves to slow down and take it easy.  It is true that they may need to avoid some physically demanding activities that can beat them up, but too many try to avoid activity completely.  It has been estimated that fewer than 20 percent of those over 65 get the amount of exercise that is recommended for them.  It is believed that as little as 2/12  hours of exercise per week may help them to stay in reasonably good shape and maintain healthy blood pressure as well as avoiding many issues such as heart disease, stroke, and some cancers.

Exercise May Help Fight Depression

Plenty of people deal with depression.  While there may be a variety of causes, there may be some common things that can help prevent it.  It has been noted that moderate exercise may be one of the most effective ways to help this, and this may be accomplished with as little as 30 minutes of exercise per week.  That is a lot of bang for the buck.

Find Ways to Make Subtle Changes

I try to look for ways I can increase exercise without even realizing it.  I may do this by parking farther out in the parking lot when I go to the store or some other place.  Those few extra steps may add up to just what is needed.  We have a corner store only a few blocks from my home, and I will sometimes walk down there to purchase something I need.  It really doesn't take much to make a difference.  You may surprise yourself at just what you can do with some simple tweaking.
