Gather the Facts for Good Decisions

By Tom Herrin

Many people go about many of their daily activities as a matter of routine.  Giving little thought about every single decision often makes it somehow seem as if it is the right thing to do.  Maybe it is, but maybe more contemplation should go into some of them.  Unless you have been living under a rock, you are well aware that the current pandemic is everywhere and has taken a large toll on many people.  The good news that has been anxiously awaited by many is that several vaccines will become available to the general public in the next few months.  Once they have been offered to healthcare workers, then the elderly, the general population will have their chance.  For many, it will be a major decision that will require serious thought.

A Few Good Thoughts

Some individuals take all kinds of vaccines.  Some people's willingness may depend upon their past experiences.  The original smallpox vaccine seemed to be a minor miracle, especially to those whose lives had been impacted.  It was highly successful.  In the mid twentieth century, the vaccine for polio suddenly gave hope to millions.  The pictures of many who had been crippled by this disease are still vivid in the minds of many.  This vaccine was first in the form of a shot, then in a sugar cube.

Some Reservations

Vaccines have had some bad reviews for valid reasons.  Some people have had allergic reactions to the things that were used in making the vaccine.  Some have had reactions to the type of vaccine.  The reactions have been such as sore arms, fever, mild illness, seizures, to death in some rare cases.  Some of the concerns people have had have been founded on stories that have little fact behind them.  Even so, it is reasonable for anyone to have concern about taking a new vaccine, particularly if they are giving them to their children.

A Lot Rests on Your Shoulders

There is much at stake when making a decision about taking the vaccine.  Some are very opposed while many others say they will gladly be the first in line.  We will all be much better off to make a decision as soon as possible so that, when the opportunity is here, we can either take it or not.  With all that has happened in the past year, there is a lot riding on it.  Sort out the facts from the fiction ahead of time.
