Do What You Can to Lengthen Life
By Tom Herrin
The idea that any of us could ever do anything that could possibly add years to our lives was once a fairly impossible thought. Many people seemed to believe that we were destined to have whatever we were dealt. In more recent times, we have to learn quite a bit. Most of us know a little about the effects of certain foods, but there is much more. With a little information and some good commitment, we can likely have a significant effect on the length of our lives.
Keep Stress at a Distance
One of the most damaging things to all of us in terms of health is stress. It is often something such as finances or worries about a job. Family issues can contribute to it as well. Whatever the cause, it can be serious and linger and grow. Dealing with it in a constructive way can take a lot of pressure off. Problems with blood pressure, fatigue, and a weak immune system can be turned around. There are many ways to help this. A few good ones are getting regular exercise, making decisions that can provide you with more control over your life, and avoiding things that add to your stress.
Treat Your Skin With Care
A common problem today is skin cancer. Those who spend a considerable amount of time in the sun run a higher risk of developing it. A few simple things can help to prevent problems. Using sunscreen regularly, wearing clothing that covers more of the body, and wearing a hat with a brim can all help. Getting regular checkups are a good practice, and if you spend much time outdoors, doing as much as possible in the shade are also good.
Get Involved
One of the greatest things I have found to make me feel better is being a better servant to others. Anytime we can find a way to do more for our community, everyone benefits. We will be interacting more with others as well as providing something that is needed. Doing something for others is one of those things that is hard to measure as to what it does, but it is one of those things that can help you sleep better at night. Take a look around and see the older individuals who appear to be advanced in age yet functioning well. All of us know someone who fits that description.
