Are You a Milk Drinker?

By Tom Herrin

When most of us were young, the value of drinking plenty of milk was emphasized.  In school, it was always served with each meal.  As a matter of fact, it still is served.  It has always been considered a basic necessity for building strong bones.  Children begin drinking milk as their primary source of nutrition.  In reality, milk may be one of the most important forms of food we have available.  Some of us, however, tend to move away from drinking it as we get older and simply never think about it.  As we know, we could generate lots of questions about it for good reasons.

Milk Can Provide Important Nutrients

Many times, when we think about milk, we think about calcium.  All milk is not alike.  We normally think in terms of cows' milk, but it actually does not have really high levels of calcium.  That is not to say it does not have any.  This milk contains quite a bit, and it is a good supply source for any of us.  If we fail to consume enough of it, however, this kind of milk alone may not provide enough to restore what we need.  Almond milk has much more calcium, so it we want to boost our supply, we may want to consider this alternative.

Milk Allergies Are Real for Many

Even though we may recognize our need to drink milk, we may not be able to do so.  Some people have allergies to milk that are very real.  It may be mild and only bother them occasionally, or it may be severe and cause them instant problems.  Some milk producers have now been able to produce milk that does not have one of the types of protein that often causes issues for some.  It may be worth trying some of this kind of milk.  You may have some good results with it.

Balance Needs and Wants

I am one of those individuals who enjoys drinking milk.  I usually drink it at least once a day and often more.  I like to drink it with meals.  I go in spells in which I may drink it plain, and then I may add some flavors such as chocolate or strawberry.  Either way, I know I can boost my protein intake by drinking plenty of it.  I also drink a glass of almond milk each day because I am older and have had times in which I have been low in calcium.  Drinking almond milk has helped me to correct that issue.
