A Stretching Routine Is Essential

By Tom Herrin

Most of us know something about stretching.  We may do it naturally early in the mornings.  The purposes it serves are the same as those used for other physical activities.  It is an important part of life.  The reason we may stretch in the mornings may be to increase circulation to our bodies.  This not only helps our muscles to be able to perform better, it may also help to prevent damage to the muscles and other soft tissue.  The same can be said of the stretches people do before they work out.  It is a big part of preventing injuries in many sports.

Stretching May Improve Flexibility

In just about everything we do that involves physical activity, having flexibility is a vital part.  In order to perform many exercises, we have to be able to extend and reach.  As we age, we have this same need, flexibility may help us to avoid injuries.   Even getting up each day can require us to be flexible.  Good stretching can help us to achieve this.

Stretching May Help Posture

A lot of us tend to have issues with our posture.  Some of this is often due to simple slouching.  Too many times, we sit incorrectly and fail to sit with our backs against the back of the chair.  A result may be that the muscles are not in balance.  We may not realize that a large part of holding our bodies in the correct position is caused by an even amount of strength and applied tension on opposite sides.  Stretching can help to keep these muscles properly trained to do this.

Be Good at Relaxing

All of us need to find ways to relax.  Some of this may be done by various kinds of meditation.  Stretching can help to accomplish some of this as well.  It can help to relieve tension and clear the mind.  A good stretch in which we are able to hold our position may be a good way to improve focus.  While we may think of stretching prior to physical activity, many advise stretching after it as a means of winding down.  It may be a great way to set aside the things that can clutter our minds.  If you haven't made a habit of stretching, this would be a good time to begin.
