Try Something Different for Exercise

By Tom Herrin

For many of us, we know we need to exercise but just can't make ourselves get into a good routine.  Some of us simply find most of the exercises we know about to be a bit too boring or methodical.  The same old things can make it difficult to keep ourselves motivated.  Some of this may be our limited mindset.  We tend to limit ourselves to only those things we are familiar with and fail to try to be creative thinkers.  There are really all kinds of things we can do that can provide some good opportunities for us to exercise.  If we do something we can have more fun with, we are far more likely to do it more.

When Was the Last Time You Were on Roller Skates?

Many of us think of roller skates as something for kids only.  Many of us can remember someone who had a broken bone doing so, but today there are many things to wear for protection.  Roller skates, or rollerblades, have increased in popularity in recent years.  What little I did as a child generally made me tired.  They can be good exercise and something enjoyable enough to pass the time as well.  There are plenty of parks and other areas where you can do it.

Jumping Rope Is Cheap

You can buy a jump rope at almost any department store.  They cost only a ew dollars.  You don't have to be great at it, you just need to practice.  You can jump to music or jump as you jog.  Some people jump as they watch television.  It is good for coordination and the cardiovascular system.  You can do it for as long as you want.  You may have had some experience in school as many of them participated in one of the fundraiser programs that promote health while raising money for a good cause.

Have You Heard of Birding?

We have many new terms for older activities.  What was once called birdwatching is now referred to as birding.  With today's technology, you can keep up with birds while walking around using your phone.  It will give you a purpose for moving around.  It can provide you with a reason to move and a challenge to see what you can identify as you do.  It also contains a mental challenge as you learn some of the traits of the birds.
