Chiropractic Is a Safe Way to Treat Back Pain

By Debra Rodzinak

Widely seen as a safe drug-free option to surgery, those who suffer with back, neck, or joint pain have a path to wellness with relatively no side effects: Chiropractic!  Other than some mild soreness or aching, such as after exercise, chiropractic has been touted as having an excellent safety record, according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA).

Effectiveness of Chiropractic

In addition to the safety factor, spinal manipulation was found to be more effective than traditional medical care for patients who have chronic lower back pain.  The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics conducted a study in March 2004 that confirmed these findings.

Nonsurgical Options

For those disinclined to surgery, seeing a chiropractor first led to less instances of surgery.  In 2012, Spine found that patients with back injuries who contacted a surgeon first had surgery 42.7 percent of the time compared to a mere 1.5 percent of patients who consulted a doctor of chiropractic first.

Cervical Manipulations

For those suffering with neck pain or chronic headaches, cervical manipulation or neck adjustments, chiropractic was found to reduce muscle spasms and increase the overall range of motion which leads to less pressure and tension in the neck and head.

Over the Counter Drugs and Surgery

Interestingly, patients who were hospitalized or died due to gastrointestinal bleeding had taken nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NASIDS) one-third of the time, according to the American Journal of Gastroenterology.  Patients who underwent surgery saw increased risks several times greater than patients who underwent chiropractic treatments, for things such as bone loss, muscle atrophy, and complications with anesthesia.  When compared to over-the-counter drugs and surgery, chiropractic is a much safer and more natural form of treatment for back and neck pain.

Chiropractic Treatment

In addition to spinal manipulation, a qualified doctor of chiropractic will advise patients with other natural means to wellness such as exercise specifically geared to strengthen muscle groups that will aid in the stabilization of the neck and spine.
