Find Relief from Shoulder Pain with Chiropractic

By Debra Rodzinak

Most people know that a chiropractor treats back or neck pain.  However, those who suffer with other types of pain, such as knee, arm, or shoulder pain, are visiting their local chiropractor for natural relief.  Adjustments that treat the extremities of the body with smaller joints like the toes, fingers, and shoulders are often performed through the use of manipulation.

Anatomy of the Shoulder

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body.  Surrounded by tissues, tendons, nerves, and bursa that can become irritated and cause painful movements, the shoulder can be a common source of pain and discomfort.  The rotator cuff is made up of four tendons that attach the muscle to the bone and ligaments that attach the bones in the shoulder of the other bone.

Since the shoulder contains so many different tendons, ligaments, and muscles that surround the joint, tearing of these many different areas can occur.  In addition, pain in the neck can also radiate from the shoulder joint.  If the range of motion is limited and pain is present, a chiropractor may be able to help relieve the pain and discomfort.

Chiropractic Adjustments

With the large amount of tissue that surrounds and supports the shoulder joint, a shift out of alignment can cause the ligaments and muscles to pull in different directions which can lead to pain, inflammation, and muscle spasms.  A skillful chiropractor can gently adjust the shoulder backward or forward along with the neck and upper back to help relieve shoulder pain.

Exercises

Before a workout, simple arm swings can help to warm up the muscles and tissues to prevent injury.  Lean forward until the shoulders hang perpendicular to the floor and swing the arms in small circles forward and then backward.  Tension bands can also provide a certain level of resistance that can help to strengthen the rotator muscles of the shoulder.

Ergonomics

While at work, an ergonomically positioned workstation can help correct the posture for stability throughout the day.  When sitting for a prolonged period of time, the shoulders can roll forward and in toward the chest.  This can lead to shoulder, neck, and back problems.
