Bipolar Disorder: There is Hope

By Rebecca Waldron

Bipolar disorder, which is also known as manic-depressive illness, "is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks,"  according to the National Institute of Mental Health.” To say the least, this can be a disabling condition. However, there is hope for those of us, like me, who have this disorder.

What Bipolar Is

Bipolar disorder is an illness that presents itself as manic symptoms which include being impulsive in spending, feeling on top of the world, acting like the life of the party, and having increased energy without the need for sleep. Sometimes mania causes loss of appetite. One example I always use to show what mania is like is when I mowed my grass and the lawns of three neighbors’ all in one day, then went home and rearranged all of my home furnishings by myself. Most people with bipolar desire the manic phases because they are at the top of their game and depression seems like a distant memory. Mania is a critical time, however, because many feel they are cured and no longer need their medication. This is obviously not true, but when you’re feeling so good, who wouldn’t want to think they’re normal again?

When the mania fades, often depression sets in. This phase of manic-depression can be so deep that it is hard to think of anything to cheer up. This is the stage in which support is vital. Rather than get out of bed, the depressed may lie in bed and cry. They may become suicidal. This is a medical emergency and must be handled immediately by medical professionals. Never assume someone is bluffing if they are suicidal. Unfortunately, those with bipolar swing back and forth between mania and depression often during the year. It can be quite the rollercoaster and exhausting. The last time I had full blown depression, I slept for days, only getting up to use the bathroom. I didn’t want to face the day.

There is Hope

With the right medication, diet and exercise, manic-depression can be well controlled. Sure, there are going to be times when life throws curveballs, but those will be rare. It is always advisable to keep under a doctor’s care when dealing with bi-polar disorder. It is manageable. It is often treated with medication and psychological counseling. It also takes support and love from family and friends. Bipolar is not the end of the dream of a fulfilling life. It means that it takes a little unique planning to care for yourself when you have highs or lows.

If you or someone you know is contemplating suicide or possibly hurting him or herself, please go to your nearest emergency room or call the National Suicide Hotline: 1-800-273-8255.
