Healthy Snacking to Get Through Your Day

By Donna Stark

Snacking has become so ingrained in our society that it's hard to imagine a day without one. From the time of sharing midday snacks when we were young, to the time of putting change into the office vending machine as adults, snacking has certainly become a daily fixture in our lives. And that's OK, as long as the snacks are healthy. Because whether you are on a diet or not, you definitely don't want to consume foods that pack on the calories and fat. Impulsive and careless snacking that is devoid of any nutrition can easily lead to excess calorie consumption, and we all know where excess calorie consumption can lead to, don't we? The dreaded, completely unwanted, weight gain.

Choosing Healthy Snacks

Snacking can play a very important role in a person's diet because it can actually help regulate blood sugar levels, improve metabolism, and prevent overeating. The key to healthy snacking though, is to choose snacks that provide a fair amount of nutrition and to keep an eye on the portion size. Here are some suggestions.

  • Apple and peanut butter - This is a great snack to choose if you have a couple of hours before your next meal because it is packed with enough nutrients, natural sugars, and protein that will boost your energy and keep you feeling full.
  • Almonds - Unsalted almonds are a perfect choice for a quick grab-and-go snack. They are packed with fiber, protein, healthy fats, and are incredibly satiating.
  • Hard-boiled eggs - Having trouble controlling your portion sizes? Grab a hard-boiled egg! It's an easy choice if you make them ahead of time and keep them ready to go in your refrigerator. Plus, it's a great source of protein.
  • Greek yogurt - If you want a sweet bite to eat that is filling and packed with protein, stick with Greek yogurt! Top it off with some fresh berries and you've got yourself an ideal snack that will satisfy your sweet tooth and provide your body with a big nutritional boost at the same time! It's also a great way to get your recommended amount of fruit for the day.
  • Smoothies - Choose the right ingredients and your midday smoothie can become a powerhouse of nutrition. Start with some Greek yogurt, add in a bit of almond milk, and toss in some fresh fruit for a filling and healthy snack that can be eaten on the go!

Snacking for Life

Our lives are as busy as our days are long, and sometimes snacking is exactly what we need to make it through the day. It's important to fill your body with amazing nutrition, so choose your snacks wisely and keep those quarters out of the vending machine!
