Get a Hobby, Exercise!
By Donna Stark
Get a hobby. Sometimes, when we are told that, it's not in the most loving tone, is it? It's usually when we cross the line annoying our children or when we invade a loved one's personal space just a little too much. But it's also not horrible advice either, especially if the new hobby that you consider turning to is exercise. That's right, exercise. You see, hobbies don't have to only consist of knitting needles, fly-fishing gear, or high-end cameras. A new hobby can actually utilize what you already have, like those sneakers up in your closet and those shorts you mow your yard in.
Make Fitness Your Hobby
Hobbies are where we turn to for recreation, relaxation, and restoration. They tap into our passions, they calm our minds, and they fill our bodies with purpose. Hobbies can often be a fundamental part of a person's expression, just as fitness should be a fundamental part of your life, and if it's not, well ... maybe you should make that your hobby. Here's why.
- Relieves stress - Stress attacks us from everywhere, and the effects of it on your health can be significant, so don't add any more to your shoulders by trying to learn how to macrame. Choose exercise as a hobby instead because studies have shown that exercise is a natural stress-reducer. All you need is 30 minutes a day for this new hobby to clear your mind and improve your health.
- Uncovers skills - The older we become, the more likely we are to settle into our daily routines. And although that is not always a bad thing, it can prevent us from achieving our goals. By choosing exercise as a hobby, you may surprise yourself with what your body can do. Do you think you can't lift those weights? I bet you can! Are you unsure you can run a mile? With enough training, you'll be able to do it in no time!
- Helps you achieve goals - Do you wish you could go for that morning jog or ride a bike with your grandchildren? Well, you can! Exercise isn't just for stress relief, it's also an avenue that will help you reach those goals. In fact, it may even help you reach those bigger dreams you have always had too, like hiking that mountain near your home or running that marathon!
Hobbies are Good
So the next time someone says "Get a hobby," don't be offended. Just tell them thank you and take their advice. Then head to your closet, grab those sneakers, and get moving! This is one hobby you are definitely sure to keep for a long time!
