Managing Your Time and Collecting Minutes

By Donna Stark

Why is it that some people can successfully juggle multiple jobs, multiple children, and multiple activities, while others can barely get through the day on their own? If we are all given the same, daily 24-hour time table, what exactly is their secret? Well, to start, let's just make one thing clear. They aren't superheroes. They're actually just like you and me. They are people who work hard, parent hard, and play hard, but the one thing that they always have under control is their time management. And you can get to that point too!

Managing Your Time Wisely

Do you wish you had more hours in your day? Do you want to know how to gain control of your time and become more productive than ever before? It doesn't matter what they're called ... secrets, simple truths, expert tips ... you just know that you need them. Here are a few to check out.

  • Stop lying to yourself - Start paying attention to those lies you tell yourself throughout the day and correct them! You know what I am talking about. The moments when you look at a clock and tell yourself, "There's not enough time." The truth is, there is always time. Sure, you may not be able to finish your presentation in the 15 minutes before you have to leave, but instead of sitting and counting down those minutes, do something else that is productive. Check your emails or make some phone calls.
  • Start prioritizing - For most days to be successful and productive, you need to create a plan, and to do that, you have to prioritize your tasks. Knowing where to start and what to do can help you manage your responsibilities and your time a lot better!
  • Stay organized - How much time did you waste the other day looking for that misplaced permission slip your child needed to take into school? And is your calendar so cluttered that you spend more time trying to decipher what is written than actually using to complete what is listed? In addition to addressing the time issues, staying organized can also give you a clear picture of what your days ahead look like so you can manage them successfully.
  • Delegate responsibilities - It doesn't matter how many things you juggle every day, there is always something that can be taken off your shoulders and shared with others. The day-to-day responsibilities of your life and work are full of opportunities to delegate, so look to those around you and share the workload.

Collecting Those Extra Hours

It may not seem like it, but there is one thing we all get an equal portion of every day ... time. So start using your minutes wisely, because when you do, you will find that they will add up to those extra hours you thought you didn't have!
