New Work Routine? No Worries!

By Donna Stark

Are you breaking up little squabbles between your children instead of tackling that morning commute? Are you eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich instead of going out for lunch with clients? If you are now working from home and are finding that it is more difficult than you imagined, stop worrying! There are many things you can do that will help bring some normalcy to your workdays and this new routine you are facing. Take a look at a few of them here.

Set Boundaries

You may not like it, but it is important to set clear and defined boundaries when you are working from home. Boundaries remove distractions that can steer you off course, allow you to think and be creative, teach people how to treat your time and energy with respect, and give you more freedom to focus on what's important to your life, such as your family, health, and future goals.

Create a Workspace

It is hard to work when your kids are bouncing off the walls right next to you, so if possible, dedicate a quiet space in your home away from all the noise to do your work in. Make sure this space is free of distractions and clear of clutter. And since you are not going to have your coworkers cheering you on or your boss looking over the cubicle wall anymore, be sure the room's design inspires and motivates you every single day. This may mean you will need to add some plants, artwork, new furniture, and good lighting to the space.

Follow the Same Routine

More than likely you already know when your productive times of the day are. Whether it is first thing in the morning or early in the evening, these are the times when you are alert, creative, and focused. Think back to what your schedule looked like when you were in the office and if you have some flexibility with your new schedule of working from home, try to mimic that same work routine you were used to. It will help those hours in the day pass by so much easier!

Finding What Works Best

What works for your coworkers may not work for you and what used to work in the office may not seem reasonable now that you are home. So, take your time to figure out what your needs will be and try to implement the best methods possible to address them. And remember, you got this!
