Why Fall and Winter are the Best Times to Get Fit

By Genevieve Cunningham

When many people think of getting fit, they think about the warmer weather. What better time to exercise than the summer, right? It feels good outside, your endorphins are pumping, and working out is just easier. While this is a great time to exercise and improve your fitness, there may be some real advantages to working out in the fall and winter. Take a look at why this time of year may be the best time to think about getting fit.

You’ll Be Ready for Warm Weather

Too many times, we think about improving our body when it’s too late. If you want a summer body, but you only begin in late spring, you’re unlikely to make the progress that you want. Beginning when it’s still cold out can help you make significant strides long before the warm weather arrives. That way, your body will be fit and ready to go before the sun arrives for the warmer seasons.

You Take In More Calories

Comfort foods are part of the winter. We love soups and hot drinks and thick breads. It keeps us warm and comforted through the season. But these foods also come with more calories. Because of the increase in calories, now is a good time to ramp up your workouts. If you can keep your body and weight gain under control while you’re eating all of the most delicious calorie-packed foods, you’ll be far ahead of the game when the warmth comes out from hiding.

It’s A More Difficult Challenge

OK, let’s be real: Working out in the winter is just hard. The last thing that we feel like doing is trudging through the cold to hit the gym. But if we do it, if we make it a priority at the most difficult time of the year, the pay off will be huge in the long run. Things that are difficult always have big returns if we stick with them and make them work. Stick with the challenge, and you’ll be reaping big rewards in the spring.

While working out in the spring and summer is definitely a good idea, it’s also incredibly beneficial to stick with your fitness plan when it’s cold and unpleasant out. Make a plan for this fall and winter, and watch your health and body improve in ways you never thought possible.
